Why are guavas so significant in Indian culture? Guavas are constantly mentioned as being calm, beautiful and peaceful. Why are they so significant in this novel? Do Indians believe they possess a special power or something?

well i don't think that they think mangoes have a special power but like you said they are very symbolic as calm, peaceful and, beautiful. i consider it to be how we view the dove as a sign of peace or even how a decorated pine tree can stand for Christmas. it's just a symbolic way of showing how Sampath is now in a calm peaceful and beautiful place in his life.

It could also be irony as Sampath's time in the guava tree is anything but peaceful.
