Why do you believe that Kiran Desai ended the book the way she did? What was the purpose for Sampeth becoming a guava? Was there symbolism behind it?

I don't think that Sampath actually turned into a guava; I believe he ran away during the hullabaloo of monkey catching and left a guava in his place.
Maybe Kiran wanted to leave it to the reader to decide what happened at the end and leave a little curiousity.
