Re: Satire? WHat is it?
It is sarcasm, irony and humor all mixed together. The author possibly used it to show that there are different ways for a person to spend his or her time. There is not one correct way. With Sampath, everyone thought that he was kind of weird until he became the baba. Then, everyone loved him. That shows how people can be so easy to change their minds in seconds. The wanted to showcase how how unaccepting people can. That is the irony.
When Sampath can do something for other people they worship him. When he's weird, he's an annoyance that must be avoided at all cost.

Satire example
@kjwalsh13
In chapter 3 Mr Chawla was making fun of the prime minister. He says, "Yes, our parliment is made of thieves, each one answerable to to the prime minister...Look how well he's doing. With each new photograph he is fatter than before." The joke he made about the prime minister is considered satire because it is sarcasm.

Examples of satire
When the DC is trying to decide on how to get rid of the monkey problem he is bumbarded with protesters quoting Sampath he questions the meaning of these slogans, "Many a pickle makes a mickle... what is a mickle... Talk of chalk... and hear about cheese. Very odd. Where did this cheese come from?" (175). The author is making fun of the ridiculousness of Sampath's words of wisdom and how gullable the villagers were.

I agree with everything allysonbrianna said. Satire can basically range from irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or exaggeration in a literary piece. A good example of satire from our society would be the weekend updates from Seth Meyers on SNL.

Thank you!
thanks for the help guys i feel like most instances in this book could be satiristic because the situations are so ridiculous. Drunk monkeys, monkey soup, Sampath turning into a guava?! these situations are full of sarcasm and irony

Seth Meyers is a great example of satire! it really is a wonderful definition of how satirical authors poke fun at society and people's actions within it.
